Frequently-Asked Questions for Shotokan

Who can join?

Currently-enrolled students with valid M-Card, those with a Department of Recreational Sports membership and an M-Card or those that purchase a Club Sports Limited User Pass. Beginners are always welcome.

Is there going to be a meeting about joining the club?

The new member meeting for shotokan karate will be Tuesday, October 6 from 7-9pm in the martial arts room at the CCRB (rm 2275).

How often does your club compete?

Our practice is traditional and includes many repetitions of basics (kihon) and forms (kata), as well as sparring (kumite). Although tournaments are held in the organization, we do not practice to compete in them, but rather to perfect our martial art. Throughout the year there are many “Special Trainings” scheduled. Special Training is an intense several day event with many difficult practices which provides a unique opportunity for members to learn from the highest level seniors in the organization. We also attend and/or host exchange practices with members and seniors from other regional dojos.

Are there club dues?

The dues to begin are $125 ($75 covers first annual membership in Shotokan Karate of America and $50 is our club dues). SKA will renew with members directly each year. U of M club dues are $50 for each term that one practices and members must maintain current membership in SKA in order to practice with the U of M Shotokan Karate Club.

Does the club provide the necessary equipment? Or do members need to bring their own?

New members do not need a uniform to begin practice. Most members wear a "gi" to practice. New members may bring their own or may purchase one from the club if they decide to join.
